The Italian-based awards recognise the finest foods from across the globe and are judged by independent professionals from the food and beverage industry. All products are blind tasted. Grants Oak Smoked, which is based in Maryport, Cumbria, scooped two gold medals. Its Traditionally Smoked Rope Hung Scottish Salmon won gold, as did its Traditionally Cured and Smoked Tzar Cut Salmon. Grants, which was established in 1983, supplies smoked salmon to hotels, restaurants, retailers and food companies across the globe. Its founder, Jonathan Brown, said: “These two gold medals are a terrific early Christmas present and cap off an astounding year for us. “2019 saw us win a three star Great Taste Award for our Grants Traditional smoked salmon, which also won Good Housekeeping magazine’s Christmas Taste Test. “Our Rope Hung smoked salmon won another Monde Gold Award and was the only independent smokehouse product to get the Good Housekeeping Taste Approved honour. “Furthermore, we became the only smokehouse in the UK to hold the international BAP accreditation which promotes the highest standards in aquaculture and seafood production. “Such awards are testament to the principles of quality the business was founded on, and prove using the very best salmon and smoking it the traditional way, over real oak chips, is a recipe for outstanding success.” Grants Traditionally Smoked Rope Hung Scottish Salmon pays homage to the oldest traditions of the craft. Hand selected fish are cured in sea salt and then rope hung by the tail in a brick kiln. They are then smoked over oak chips from Scottish whisky barrels. The smoked salmon is then left to rest before being hand sliced. Grants Traditionally Cured and Smoked Tzar Cut Salmon is the tenderloin fillet from individually selected fish. The “Tzar cut” gets its name from being the historical preference of Russian Tzars as it is most tender and succulent part of the fish. The salmon is traditionally cured and then cold smoked over real oak chips. The tenderloin is then hand cut from the fish. Mr Brown added: “Winning so many awards in 2019 proves we continue to lead the industry in producing smoked salmon which is not only the finest tasting, but which is also responsibly sourced and produced. “We are proud to export our smoked salmon right across the globe from our premises at the edge of the Lake District, and these awards reflect the care, professionalism and commitment of everyone who works at Grants. We look forward to further success in 2020.” Notes: For media enquiries, please contact Wills Media on 07889 292 777, or email james@willsmedia.co.uk . Grants Traditional Rope Hung Smoked Scottish Salmon has been awarded the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Taste Approved award. The Good Housekeeping Institute’s independent experts test thousands of products each year in Quality Assessment Tests at its state-of-the-art facility in London’s Soho. Only the finest products are awarded the Taste Approved certification based on taste, texture, appearance and aroma. Grants owner Jonathan Brown said: “This is yet another honour for our premium product, the Rope Hung." “Good Housekeeping is the UK’s best-selling consumer magazine and has an online audience in the millions. The Good Housekeeping Institute’s stamp of approval is of huge importance because it carries real weight with millions of shoppers. Only the finest products receive this accolade. “Our Rope Hung is widely recognised as being among the world’s best and this new award confirms it. It already holds a three star Great Taste award, two gold medals from the Monde Federation and is the product of choice for some of the world’s leading chefs. “The Rope Hung is so labour intensive and expensive to produce it makes little commercial sense to do so, but I wanted people to be able to enjoy smoked salmon as it really should taste.” The Rope Hung is made with hand-picked Atlantic salmon from Scottish suppliers with the highest possible environmental and aquaculture standards. It is hand-trimmed and then hand-cured in sea salt, and rope hung in Grant’s brick kiln. Under the personal supervision of the master smoker, each side is then smoked for up to 36 hours over oak chips made from Scottish whisky barrels. After removal, it is allowed to rest in Grants’ conditioning room for 24 hours before being hand sliced. Mr Brown said: “This has been a tremendous year for Grants. Our smokehouse is the only one in the UK to be BAP certified, which means it carries the highest possible global certification for our choice of suppliers and production methods. For us to now be the only independent UK smokehouse to hold the Good Housekeeping Institute’s stamp of approval for one of our products is a true honour. “Traditional taste tests are personal in nature and dependant on the preferences of the people carrying them out. Nonetheless we were also delighted to dominate the separate 2019 Good Housekeeping magazine taste tests with the winning product and another in the top four*. “Just a couple of months ago one of our core products – Grants Scottish Traditional long sliced smoked salmon – also won three stars in the Great Taste awards. “When I started the company in 1984, straight after leaving school, I wanted Grants to be the benchmark of quality for the smoked salmon industry and these awards prove we remain just that.” http://bfff.co.uk/smoked-salmon-company-receives-good-housekeeping-institutes-stamp-of-approval/

Grants Oak Smoked Ltd. has won a second three-star Great Taste award in this year’s contest, run by the Guild of Fine Food. The Cumbria, United Kingdom-based company’s Grants’ Traditional longsliced smoked salmon was commended by judges for its “beautiful presentation… melting texture… delicate and complex taste…" Two years ago, Grants’ Traditionally Smoked Rope Hung Scottish Salmon also won the three-star award. “To win three stars with two separate products in such a short period of time is a fantastic success. For the Grants Traditional longsliced – one of our core products - to win three stars represents an amazing achievement. It signifies the emphasis we have placed on quality for more than 30 years,” Grants Owner Jonathan Brown said. “We only source the finest salmon from suppliers with the highest aquaculture and environmental standards. Each fish is then hand-trimmed, cured and smoked the traditional way, over real oak chips, under the personal supervision of our master smoker. When I started the company, hand-delivering single sides of smoked salmon to Lake District chefs, I vowed quality would always be the benchmark which set us apart, and I am thrilled this latest award recognizes that.” Employing more than 100 people, Grants supplies smoked salmon and other products to restaurants, hotels, retailers and catering companies around the world. "As a family company, we are very proud of our Cumbrian roots and always do our utmost to promote the area and its produce across the globe. Awards such as this help us in this process. Everything we have achieved would not have been possible without the dedication and support of every member of our team, some of whom have been with us for decades. This award also recognizes their hard work and excellence,” said Brown. The Great Taste Awards 2019 saw a panel of 12 experts – comprising chefs, cookery writers, food critics, restaurateurs and fine food retailers – blind taste more than 12,000 products from across the globe. Less than 3 percent of entries received the three-star award.

The annual awards, run by the Guild of Fine Foods, see more than 12,000 products from across the globe blind tasted by 12 panels of experts made up of top chefs, cookery writers, food critics, restaurateurs and fine food retailers. They are then given a star rating, with less than three per cent of entries receiving the three star award. Among Cumbrian companies receiving a three star rating was smoked salmon company Grants, based in Maryport. Grants Oak Smoked’s Traditional longsliced smoked salmon was praised by judges for its "beautiful presentation", "melting texture" and "delicate and complex taste". It was one of only two UK smoked salmon products to get the three-star accolade. Two years ago Grants’ premium product, its Traditionally Smoked Rope Hung Scottish Salmon, also won the prestigious three star award. The company’s owner, Jonathan Brown, said: “Once again we are delighted the renowned Great Taste experts have recognised the dedication, expertise and quality of our products. “To win three stars with two separate products in such a short period of time is a fantastic success. Grants Oak Smoked’s Traditional Rope Hung Smoked Scottish Salmon has been awarded the 2019 Monde Selection Gold Award. The Monde Selection panel of 70 international independent experts, rate the finest food and drink from across the globe not just on taste, but also chemically and biologically test products to ensure the ingredients, provenance and nutritional information are accurate. The awards have been run since 1961 and this year more than 2,000 products from hundreds of countries were tested. Grants Oak Smoked has been based in Maryport, Cumbria, since 1984 and currently employs more than 100 people. It supplies smoked salmon and other products to retailers, hotels, caterers and food companies across the globe. The owner, Jonathan Brown, who set up the company straight after leaving school, said: “We are obviously delighted independent experts have once again recognised our rope hung smoked salmon as one of the world’s premier products. “Our rope hung smoked salmon is a return to the traditional methods of the past. We choose only the finest Scottish fish from suppliers with the highest aquaculture and environmental standards, and then hand cure it in sea salt before rope hanging the salmon in a brick open fire kiln. “It is then smoked over oak chips from whisky barrels and constantly supervised for up to 72 hours, before being removed and left to rest for another 24 hours. “When requested, it is then hand sliced. Not a single side leaves us without the master smoker’s personal seal of approval. “It is a labour-intensive, time-consuming process but the result is a smoked salmon which can sit alongside the finest foods from across the globe. “The 2019 Gold Monde award – the product’s second – is testament to the care and attention to detail we lavish on all our products and follows on from the Great Taste three-star award it won in 2017.” https://restaurant-update.co.uk/2019/04/16/company-wins-international-gold-award/

Only the finest products are awarded the Taste Approved certification based on taste, texture, appearance and aroma. Grants owner Jonathan Brown said: “This is yet another honour for our premium product, the Rope Hung. “Good Housekeeping is the UK’s best-selling consumer magazine and has an online audience in the millions. The Good Housekeeping Institute’s stamp of approval is of huge importance because it carries real weight with millions of shoppers. Only the finest products receive this accolade. “Our Rope Hung is widely recognised as being among the world’s best and this new award confirms it. It already holds a three Great Taste award, two gold medals from the Monde Federation and is the product of choice for some of the world’s leading chefs. Nonetheless we were delighted to dominate the separate 2019 Good Housekeeping magazine taste tests with two of our products in the top four*. “Just a couple of months ago one of our core products – Grants Scottish Traditional long sliced smoked salmon - also won three stars in the Great Taste awards. “When I started the company in 1984, straight after leaving school, I wanted Grants to be the benchmark of quality for the smoked salmon industry and these awards prove we remain just that.” Notes: *The products concerned were the “Fish Society Fishrjumpin’ Smoked Salmon” which is supplied to the company exclusively by Grants, and the Rope Hung. Family firm Grants Oak Smoked, which employs more than 100 people, supplies smoked salmon to retailers, restaurants and food companies across the globe.
